Every once in awhile a movie comes along that changes the game of cinema. In 1999 a movie with little anticipation blew the minds of all those who saw it. Once word of mouth got started, The Matrix became unstoppable, often resulting in people seeing it two, three, four times to revel in the reality-bending special effects (later coined as "bullet time" effects) and just general kick-a$$ story telling.
I was in college at the time, and some of the philosophical topics the movie raised (What's the nature of reality? Are we all just slaves to technology out of control?) became the fodder for many late night debates. I remember sitting in the theatre thinking, this movie will change the way other movies are made. And it did.
But beyond that, it infiltrated pop culture with incredible visuals unlike anyone had ever seen and phrases that could be readily applied to our now questionable reality. "There's a glitch in the matrix!" became synonymous anytime something weird or unexplainable occurred, or "There is no spoon" became the comment to make when needing to truly think outside the box to solve a problem.
Its unfortunate that the remaining two movies in the Trilogy weren't as mind-blowing as the original...but a Fourth movie is on its way, and maybe, just maybe, it will capture the magic of the first.

"This is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back. You take the blue pill — the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill — you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes."
