There are a lot of romantic movies out there, and while I would say most are pretty good I would also say most are pretty formulaic and predictable. Before Sunrise turned a lot of heads (including mine) because it was anything but formulaic. It focused on the chance meeting of two strangers on a train (nothing too original about that...) but what followed was a pure, stream of conscious, depiction of two people falling in love.
There was no in depth plot to get in the way. Instead, Jesse and Celine casually meander through a picturesque Vienna simply talking. Yup...just talking. With each new destination and conversation topic, their initial attraction deepens and grows into something much much more. What's so engrossing about that? If you've ever shared a conversation with someone that was so effortless and so exhilarating and full of promise, you'll know why "just talking" is perhaps more captivating than any intricately designed movie plot with twists and turns. Don't get me wrong, I love those movies too but there's a special place in my heart for the spoken word and watching two people as fully "in it" as these two (played so genuinely by Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy) is second only to being "in it" yourself. I encourage you to watch it and see what I mean :) I dare you not to reminisce of your youth (if you're on the older side) or wonder at the possibility of something similar happening to you (if you're just beginning life's journey).
If you do watch it and end up enjoying it as much as I did, rejoice for there is a sequel! Don't worry, that's on my list too...but I'm getting ahead of myself... First, you've got a puzzle to solve :)
