Amelie marks the first foreign movie in my Favorite Films mystery series. I realize this might cause many to automatically write it off (Sacré bleu…subtitles! 😱) but I hope I may have earned a little consideration given the other films on my list. I would encourage you to check this one out too. At its core, Amelie is about bringing happiness to others without any need for acknowledgement or recognition. Given current events, who wouldn’t want to escape and watch something that refills your sense of humanity again!
Amelie debuted in 2001, which coincided with my senior year of college. I was already spending most of my discretionary time at our local art house cinema so it didn’t take any arm twisting to buy a ticket to this one. When I left the theatre, not only did I remember feeling happy at the story I had just witnessed, but inspired by the visual creativity that was used to tell it (you’ll see what I mean if you decide to watch…)
One particular thread within the movie stuck with me (and perhaps inspired a certain Travelocity ad campaign), and 22 years later gave me an idea for the puzzle you're about to tackle. I hope you enjoy!

My friend gnomy reached out to me during the Pandemic and we had the following conversation:
Gnomy: I'm tired of just hanging out in your yard...I want to see the world and experience new things!
Me: Well, what's stopping you?
Gnomy: You mean besides the Pandemic and travel advisories and CDC guidance to avoid crowded areas? Nothing really. I've saved up plenty of money and vacation time. I guess I'm lacking some ideas at this point.
Me: Oh, well I can help you out with that! Ribbsit and I have been to some pretty amazing places in the world. We celebrated my 30th birthday first by living it up in Key West then going on a tropical caribbean cruise with my best friend and his future wife. Oh, and because Ribbsit didn't want to be outdone, the next year we hopped on a plane and visited New Zealand! It was the second time for me, but I have to say that country has so much to see and do I'd visit another dozen times if I could!
Gnomy: Wow! Those places sound great! Where else would you recommend?
Me: Well, for a truly special occasion Ribbsit and I took a ferry to Victoria where on one magical night, I asked her to marry me! We had so many adventures together by that point, I couldn't image going through life with anyone else. Thankfully, she said yes! To mix things up a bit, in the Spring of 2012 we wanted to get a closer look at Tinseltown so off we went.
Gnomy: So were the actors as cool in real life as they are on tv?!?
Me: Completely! We had a blast but our traveling bug was starting to itch for bigger destinations so in the Fall, to celebrate our wedding, we stepped out of our comfort zone and flew to the opposite side of the world and explored Africa. Safari! Wine! Coffee! It was unlike any experience we'd ever had and I would HIGHLY recommend visiting!
Gnomy: This is great! Anywhere else stick in mind worth visiting?
Me: Hmm...lets see. Obviously, the Big Apple and the Windy City are two places you have to make it to at some point! We hit both of those in 2014 then 2018 respectively. Of course, by the time 2018 came around we had PFjr so he got to come with us as well. Such a traveler he already is! And then we....
Gnomy: Ok, Ok! I think that's enough ideas! You've got me so excited I'm going to hop on Travelocity and start booking the trip of my life! Once the world returns to normal and its safe to travel again, I'm going to do it!
Me: That's great, Gnomy! Be sure to send me some pictures from wherever you end up visiting!
2 years later...
Imagine my surprise when I began receiving picture after picture from VERY familiar places! It was such a wonderful walk down memory lane, and truly flattering that he decided to re-live the adventures Ribbsit and I once had. And he looked and sounded like he was having a GREAT time! I hope this may inspire YOU to do a little traveling...its a big world out there with so much to see and experience, and its never too late to get out there.
