Growing up I would never have classified myself as a "Bond fan." Sure, I've seen quite a few of them, and hold an opinion on who has portrayed the titular hero in the most gratifying way (clearly a tie between the late, great, Sean Connery and the brooding Daniel Craig!). But I was never really obsessed, or drawn to the films like others have been. I think it was the campiness and unbelievable storylines and villains that ultimately prevented me from going all in..until Casino Royale.
I had heard the controversy over the first blonde Bond...but I was also hearing the praise of the grittiness and the realistic portrayal of a formidable (and tortured) governmental assassin and was intrigued. So I headed to my nearest cinema and over the next 2 hours and 24 minutes I was engrossed, captivated, and thrilled by everything about this Bond. The smart (and twisty!) storyline, the believably odd villain, the stone-cold nuanced portrayal that instantly set Craig apart from all previous actors...it all worked so very well and I was immediately a believer. The next 3 installments were all very good too, but in my opinion none raised the ante like Casino Royale did. I hope Craig's final installment, No Time To Die, will be a fitting send off for truly one of the greats. But until that one FINALLY gets released, I encourage you to revisit this great film, or if you haven't had the pleasure, watch it for the first time.
