Wine was always just another beverage growing up; something to have occasional sips of on holidays but largely ignored. But that all changed the second semester of my senior year in college when I took Wine Appreciation. I’ll admit, it started out as just a way to get homework that actually required me to drink alcohol. No brainer, right? But who knew it was going to turn into a fundamental love for the rest of my life. Everything about wine is interesting. From the cultivation of the grapes, to the chemistry of fermentation, to the sublime tastes it affords not only by itself, but paired with endless varieties of food.
So when a movie came out not 3 years after taking this course and it focused on the complexities of wine (and life) featuring a memorable cast from a well know director, I was in the theatre before you could pop a cork!
Paul Giamatti nailed his role as the complex, wine aficionado struggling to come to terms with where his life had taken him and Virginia Madsen drank up the screen in an Oscar nominated role with charisma and depth. Not to mention that it introduced the world to the talents of Sandra Oh before she went on to wow viewers on tv’s Greys Anatomy.
But what truly appealed to me about this movie was how it stirred up interest in wine not only for existing lovers of the craft, but for newbies and amateurs alike. For those not familiar with the wine world, entering into a tasting can be like stepping into a foreign country where it’s almost impossible to understand what people are talking about! This movie made wine accessible, and any movie that can do that AND thoroughly entertain you along the way deserves your attention.
For this puzzle you’ll need to immerse yourself in the world of wine and get comfortable with its associated unique (and extensive) vocabulary. Below is a basic word search with 44 wine related terms hidden within. But this will be like a blind tasting…no words will be provided.
After you’re finished, the unused letters will provide a phrase you will need to unlock the location of the cache. Within that phrase there will be one word that is obviously out of place. Replace it with the appropriate word then enter the entire corrected phrase into the checker (leaving out any punctuations) and you’ll soon be toasting success!
Good luck, and….CHEERS!
