I realize that Garden State is probably one of the more polarizing movies of my generation: Half felt it tapped into the very soul of its target audience and laid bare all that we were going through at that time and half felt it was a pretentious load of poo masked by an innovative soundtrack.
I'm 100% in the former camp. When I watched this movie, I felt like someone had reached deep inside me and pulled out all the fears, apprehensions, and confusions, that permeated my life in my twenties. Walking away from the theatre I had this overwhelming sense of calm, as if I had just purged all the angst that had been building up inside me and I felt I was free to rush into life again. The cast was perfect: Natalie Portman whom I've always been a huge fan of; Peter Sarsgaard whom I really haven't seen too many movies with him, but each one I have seen there is just something captivating about his presence; and Zach Braff who I didn't have any experience with but who clearly poured his entire being into writing, directing, and starring in this movie. Together they told a moving story of growing up and living life.
And that soundtrack! I'd never been more compelled to run out and buy a movie soundtrack in my life. Once I had it, I'm pretty sure I listened to it every day for a solid year...just ask my coworkers who had to listen to it first thing in the morning...every morning. And it's the soundtrack that EVERYONE seemed to agree on, haters and fans alike. It fit so perfectly into each scene of the movie and tapped into just the right emotions that it BECAME the movie.
If you haven't seen the film, I'd recommend watching it and giving it a try...you may or may not connect with it. But if you haven't listened to the soundtrack, well, I'd listen to Sam...You gotta hear this one song. It'll change your life, I swear.
