Who hasn't wanted a second chance at the one that got away?
Before Sunset is the sequel to the incredible film Before Sunrise and it earns a spot in my Favorite Films for many reasons. For those that appreciated the simplicity and romanticism of the first film, but were left with lingering questions, this sequel delivers in spades. Not only is the palpable chemistry that was so evident in Before Sunrise still present, it has simmered, aged, and grown stronger. Before Sunset is set (and was likewise filmed) 9 years after the first film. Because real life has literally matured these characters, they each bring with them a set of lived-in baggage, raising the question: Are they still right for each other? Or perhaps more important: Are they willing to disrupt their lives to find out?
The robust, fluid dialogue is again present in this film, and while its predecessor was a lazy, meandering, stream-of-conscious exploration of two strangers, Before Sunset beats with a sense of urgency and anxiety as it becomes apparent these two are living unfulfilled lives; its like a part of each of them stayed locked away together in Vienna while the other parts moved on. This feeling of "what if" is only made more intense by the fact that the movie was filmed in realtime which means that the amount of time that Jesse and Celine walk through the streets of Paris is the same as the time experienced by the viewer. What starts as an exciting reunion quickly builds to a sense of urgency for both the characters (and us!), knowing there is so much to talk about and so little time available.
Will they decide to upend their individual lives and choose to start a new one together? Or has life changed who they are fundamentally and they agree that Vienna was a wonderful but singular experience? You'll have to watch the film to get the answer to that question :)
But don't take my word for how amazing and incredible this film was. See what the following people (renowned in the field) had to say!
